What to do if my dog drinks a lot, or urinate

If you observe that your dog has started drinking a lot, and therefore urinate, it is important to seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible. It is very likely that your dog is suffering from some (less or more serious) disease.

It can be a whole range of diseases, from "just cold", respectively inflammation of the bladder or kidneys to more serious diseases - in females relatively frequent uterine inflammation in the period of about 1-2 months after heat. Irrespective of the age of the animal, serious illnesses, such as inflammation of the liver and kidneys of infectious origin, may develop until their fail, leading to the death of the animal. Another cause may be hormonal diseases - the most common include diabetes, as well as thyroid disease. Among the less common, but even more serious hormonal diseases manifested by increased fluid intake and increased urination, are adrenal diseases (the so-called Cushing's syndrome / Addison's disease), or other diseases.

So, if you observe that your animal is drinking significantly more water than usual, it is best to seek professional help as soon as possible!

And how can you - the owners help? Before visiting the vet is recommended to find out the amount of consumed water (best measure the amount of water drunk in 24 hours). If it is a female, remember the last heat, respectively, when it was over. A great help in solving the problem of your pet is also a urine sample, taken about 1-2 hours before visiting the vet. It is recommended not to feed animal for 12 hours – for need of blood collection.

Warning: NEVER try to "solve" the problem by reducing the amount of water!
